Nature is Calling

We want to inspire you to urinate in the gardens of the world. Chickfly isn’t just about freedom and liberty. Chickfly may be about empowering women to be able to pee outside in more situations, about making it socially acceptable, and is alsoabout ecological sustainability.

Chickfly founder, Anna Birkás, has been working for the sustainable revolution since she was sixteen. She studied Environmental Ecology and did a masters in Forest Hydrology. After becoming a General Engineering contractor, she created her first company, Village Ecosystems, focuses on Sustainable Water Design and Construction.

Anna works in the fields of water, to reduce climate change and prevent ecological collapse. One way to do that is social change.

We Ran the Numbers

A person can Save 6388 gallons of water per year by going without 5flushes/day.

That means, if we can inspire 1000 women to save three flushes a day, we will save 3,832,500 gallons per year.

19% of California’s Energy is used to treat and pump water, so when you turn on the tap, you are also turning on the power.

Our urine contains significant levels of nitrogen, as well as phosphorous and potassium (typically an N-P-K ratio around 11 – 1 – 2.5, similar to commercial fertilizers). Americans produce about 90 million gallons of urine a day, containing about 7 million pounds of nitrogen. Studies conducted in Sweden(Sundberg, 1995; Drangert, 1997) show that an adult’s urine contains enough nutrients to fertilize 50-100% of the crops needed to feed one adult.

Urine is Gold

No, seriously, do you know where Nitrogen fertilizer comes from now? We make it from natural Gas that was likely fracked. To turn natural gas into fertilizer, we burn a bunch more fuel and energy (climate change alert).

Adding insult to environmental catastrophe, most of the urine that is flushed down the toilet end up in rivers, lakes and the ocean, where it causes eutrophication, or algal blooms. Algae love the extra nutrients and they grow so fast, the use up the available oxygen in the water, leaving none for fish, and resulting in death of aquatic organisms. Dead zones. Dead lakes, dead outlets miles wide in the ocean next to cities.

Do it High and Dry

To contribute to environmental sustainability, rather than cause a nuisance, pee in mulch, near plants, and don’t go in the same place multiple times in a row. Don’t pee in ditches or near streams, lakes, or rivers. Pee on ground that is high and dry, not down low, unless specifically instructed to do otherwise by the park service
